ANKARA - 85-year-old Sıddık Güler, a seriously ill prisoner, has been released from prison.

 

Sıddık Güler, an 85-year-old seriously ill prisoner held in Iskenderun T Type Closed Prison, has been released. Güler's lawyers had applied to İskenderun Chief Public Prosecutor's Office for their client to be transferred to Forensic Medicine Institution (ATK) 

 

Güler was referred to the ATK on 20 June. The 11th Specialised Board of the ATK prepared its report on the examination on 27 June. Pointing to Güler's age, health problems, medications and hospital reports, the Board's report stated that Güler "cannot sustain her life alone".

 

Iskenderun Chief Public Prosecutor's Office wrote to the police and asked whether Güler posed a "danger to society". Alişan Police Station in Peyas (Kayapınar) district of Amed responded to the prosecutor's letter this morning, stating that Güler "does not pose a danger to society". The prosecutor decided to release Güler.

Güler, who is on the Human Rights Association's (IHD) list of seriously ill prisoners, has been imprisoned since 1994. Güler, who was sentenced to life imprisonment on political grounds, has diseases such as hypertension, bone, heart disease, venous insufficiency, inflammatory joint rheumatism and Alzheimer's disease. He also suffers from age-related problems, severe forgetfulness, hearing loss and speech difficulties. Güler struggles to live in a wheelchair.
